¹⁴ because the life of every creature is its blood. That is why I have said to the Israelites, “You must not eat the blood of any creature, because the life of every creature is its blood; anyone who eats it must be cut off.”^(A)

²² Jacob went close to his father Isaac,^(A) who touched^(B) him and said, “The voice is the voice of Jacob, but the hands are the hands of Esau.”

² And he wept^(A) so loudly that the Egyptians heard him, and Pharaoh’s household heard about it.^(B)

¹⁶ When David finished saying this, Saul asked, “Is that your voice,^(A) David my son?” And he wept aloud.

⁸ Already you have all you want! Already you have become rich!^(A) You have begun to reign—and that without us! How I wish that you really had begun to reign so that we also might reign with you!

⁷ You should not be surprised at my saying, ‘You^[a] must be born again.’

Praise to God for a Living Hope

³ Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ!^(A) In his great mercy^(B) he has given us new birth^(C) into a living hope^(D) through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead,^(E)

³ Jesus replied, “Very truly I tell you, no one can see the kingdom of God unless they are born again.^[a]”^(A)
